Name:Matt Newall

Lives in: Otley, West Yorkshire

Occupation:Carpet Fitter

Angling Category: Match Angler / All-Round Coarse Angler

Describe yourself as an angler:
I’ve been fishing since I was about 10 years old, and I’ve loved every style of angling I’ve tried along the way. These days I split my time between rivers and commercials — chasing barbel and chub on flowing water, and then switching to match tactics for carps and silvers on commercial fisheries. I’m happiest fishing short and down the margins on commercials, or fishing stick float or feeders on the big rivers. I’m competitive, but for me it’s equally about the enjoyment, the challenge, and being outdoors.

Favourite Venues:Woodlands, Thirsk & the River Trent

Favourite Species: Barbel (especially big Trent fish)

Favourite Method/Approach:Short pole and margins on commercials, feeder and float fishing on big rivers.

Favourite Hinders Bait:Can’t beat Elips Pellets for river fishing, and for commercials nut 365 ground bait is deadly in the margins.

Most Memorable Session:There’s been many over the years, one being my barbel PB off the river Trent, as well as 300lb+ match winning weight at Woodlands Lakes, and 100lb+ weights of bream from the river Trent.

Target for the Next 12 Months:Keep improving in matches, and enter a few more of the big competitions, and push my barbel PB even further.

Current Personal Best Captures Include:
Barbel – 13.7lb (River Trent)
