With overnight temperature down to zero Celsius and a white frost I wasn't too optimistic about my first crucian trip of the year, on speaking to the guy in the tackle shop at Marsh Farm he said things had been very quiet all week and I was not to expect too much.
Armed with some Tutti Frutti expander mix, 2.3mm Tutti feed pellets and some Tutti oil I was well prepared. I was also feeding casters as I was to fish a single fake caster glugged in Betalin, I had several rigs tied and glugged up beforehand so there would me no messing about on the bank as these rigs are quite tricky to tie with tiny size 18 hooks.
It took a couple of hours to get my first bite but it proved to be a lovely fish of 2lb 11oz. I was fishing a little Drennan method feeder with just a 2 inch hook length,
throughout the afternoon I had another 5 bites resulting in another 4 crucian between 2.2 & 2.15, I also lost one at the net.
Considering everyone around me never had a bite I was well pleased with the outcome on a tricky day. Things will only get better from now with the overnight temperatures rising.
This combination of tutti expander mix, with matching 2.3mm pellets, tutti oil and casters really takes some beating, in my opinion the best Crucian groundbait out there.
