Starting the day bright and early, I set up on peg 25 to try out our new wafter range (coming soon). Keeping things simple, I fished a 30g inline lead with a size 12 Drennan push stop hair rig about a foot off the far bank.

As the Betalin & Sweet Almond wafters are quite soft, this style of rig worked perfectly as they are easy to pierce with a baiting needle and sit nicely on the hair.

I found that feeding just a couple of Nut 365 8.5mm Feed pellets over the top produced the most bites. On my second rod I fished a small feeder about 2–3 rod lengths away, using the Nut 365 Expander Mix as usual. I made sure to feed little and often as the fish were clearly moving in and out of the area rather than sitting on a heavy bed of bait.

As the day went on and the elusive British sunshine started beaming down on me, the fishing slowed around 11:45am. At that point I was on 11 fish and feeling confident, but the fish seemed to have other ideas.

I kept moving my rigs around the swim and managed to pick off the odd fish every 30 minutes to an hour. After covering what felt like every inch of water, bites became very scarce and we could see fish sitting deep near the reed beds, clearly enjoying the sunshine.

Later in the afternoon as the sun started to drop, things began to change. I started getting the odd liner again from the area I had fished earlier, which gave me confidence there were still fish to be caught.

By late afternoon I had reached 17 fish. As 4pm approached I noticed the reeds in front of me moving slightly. With time running out I scattered a few pellets over the area and positioned my rig over the top. Almost instantly the rod ripped off and another fish couldn’t resist the Betalin & Sweet Almond wafter.

After slipping that one back, I recast to the same spot and it happened again… then again. Within about 15 minutes I managed three quick fish, taking my total to 20.

A great way to end the day and proof that the Betalin & Sweet Almond wafters are definitely a winner. It’s a product I’m really looking forward to using more once they’re released.

As always, a great day on the banks of Flaxlands Fishery with over 20 bites and 20 fish landed.
