When the gates shut behind you at Bramble Mere the anticipation starts to build as you enter the sanctuary of this secure 7-acre spring fed lake. As you make your way down the path from the car park you get your first sight of the lake through the mature Cotswold countryside and you await your first sign of life from either one of the stunning original or hand-picked stock of Common and scaly Mirrors that average 20lb plus but reach over 40lbs. I had the rare opportunity to fish a 50-hour social session over the weekend but unfortunately the relentless rain and strong cold SE winds meant it was more or a shelter session than a social!

However, I was at Bramble Mere and I wasn’t going to let the conditions lower the mood. The van was unloaded and we set about our plan of attack. Once we had located some nice clear spots on the back of the wind we set about introducing a Betalin-B infused bait mix and we were lucky enough to get the result we were after as just four hours into the first day the blank was saved when we banked the first Carp of the session an absolutely stunning scaly Bramble Mirror which we later found out is named ‘Ruben’ and is one of the  lakes ‘A-Team’.

Due to the Cootes and Crayfish in the lake I wanted to use a rig that would reset itself if it was picked up by any unwanted attention so I chose a long fluorocarbon d-rig approach with a yellow Hinders Bait Plum and Betalin wafter tied off with 10-12 Betalin-B infused maggots.

This was fished over an irresistible cocktail (if you are a Carp) of chopped Nut 365 boilies, Hemp and Cut maize, Betalin-B flavoured maggots, lashings of the Nut 365 Liquid foodand a few chopped worms which were all thoroughly mixed and given a final dusting of Betalin-B powder just for good measure – the new improved Nut 365 Range smells awesome and definitely got the Carp rooting around!

Bites were patchy as you would expect in January but we did continue to get a few bites as we ended the session under the cover of darkness on Sunday night with seven bites resulting in five stunning Carp on the bank ranging from an upper double to 26lb 8oz - a tally which included five 20’s. Watch out for the full VLOG coming soon that not only shows the Carp caught but details the way we prepared the bait and how the session came together on our YouTube channel @danglingdays. Bramble Mere can be booked by a group of anglers for private hire and is highly recommended. For all Bramble Mere bookings visit www.bramblemere.com
